Diagnostic Week – Mythical Creatures (Reference & Research)

I started by researching the possible mythological creatures which I could potentially study.     My original idea was to study the legend behind the creature and learn what makes it so fearful.

What I found interesting about this image was how the artist has managed to make a scary mythological creature look cute and almost harmless. As this idea had already been driven into the ground many times I knew i’d had to look for another idea.

I then started thinking about the origins of the creatures and why anyone would want to combine these animals, because it clearly didn’t happen by chance.

griffin

My favourite mythological creature became the Griffin. I found this: “Because the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature.”  This was interesting, but I wandered what it would have been like if this creature actually existed in the real world. I wanted to explore the possibility of what the meeting of the Eagle and Lion would have been like, but present it in a comical way. I ended up picturing my video presented in a black and white silent film, like the old instructional videos you sometimes see dotted around media.
